This exhibition aims to give a glimpse of the ship “Shinan” and the trading culture of East Asia of the time through the display of the objects retrieved from the Shinan wreck excavation which opened a new chapter in the Korean underwater archaeological history; Chinese ceramics excavated from Korea, China and Japan; Goryeo celadon, the exports of Goryeo to Japan; and the watchtower of the ship.

It is the first exhibition of its kind in Korea, showing the level of Goryeo and Japan in the field of ceramics in the 14th century: while the former became the world’s second to produce the porcelain after China, the latter was only able to produce the stoneware imitating the porcelain of Korea and China.

The items to be displayed are 230 relics including ceramics recovered from the Shinan wreck, Chinese ceramics from the same period but excavated from land, and the Chinese or Goryeo celadon discovered in Japan. The most valuable are the celadon jar with a lid and pleats design, which was excavated from the Sujongsa temple and now housed in the Buddhist Museum after being designated as Treasure No. 259-1; the celadon saucer with inlaid chrysanthemum design in the possession of the National Museum of Korea; and the celadon vase with fish and dragon designs under the care of Gwangju National Museum.

Exploring the history and diversity of ceramic wares produced in non-imperial kilns, this exhibition uncovers the diverse export markets Chinese ceramics catered for from the 7th century up until 1700.

With over 100 pieces on show dating from the Tang (618 - 907AD) until the early Qing dynasty (1644 – 1911AD), this exhibition provides an insight into the importance of Chinese ceramics made specifically for export before 1700 and the involvement of the Arabians, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese and later European powers in this maritime trade.

From the start of rice cultivation in the paddies, people had defied and worshipped gods to secure water resources. The role to lead such rituals was gradually taken by the chiefs. Rituals celebrating pure water were undertaken at wells. Some rituals expected power of water flow to wash away and purify the contamination.
This special exhibition will show you the artifacts used in such water related rituals from Yayoi Period to Nara and Heian Period. We also show you the old documents related to these rituals. Hope you will see the wishes of ancient people reflected on the water and the transition of the water related rituals reflecting political ambition.

Taking the unification of the empire under China's first emperor Qin Shihuangdi as its starting point, the exhibition focuses on the Qin, Han and Tang dynasties (221 BC - 907 AD) and showcases 200 magnificent objects from the sumptuous funerary complexes and rich temple furnishings of the emperor and the aristocracy. An impressive computer-aided display allows a glimpse into the as yet unopened burial chambers of two imperial tombs.
Employing the latest technology, the exhibition introduces the public to the area around China's ancient capital and highlights the outstanding importance of this world heritage site. A comprehensive book on the archaeology of Xi’an is published in conjunction with the exhibition, and a three-day international conference will bring together the leading scholars of the field. In seventeenth-century Japan, Chinese porcelain was prized--so much so that it became an important part of the Japanese tea ceremony. To satisfy this new market, the Chinese of the late Ming dynasty (1368 –1644) had to accommodate a taste vastly different from their own, one that treasured asymmetry and even imperfections. Trade Taste & Transformation: Jingdezhen Porcelain for Japan, 1620–1645 is the first comprehensive survey in the United States of this unique Chinese porcelain developed for export to Japan. The exhibition will include approximately 100 objects, many rarely seen outside Japan, including tiny incense boxes, flower vases, water jars and charcoal burners, as well as bowls and plates. The porcelain, known to the Japanese as kosometsuke, “old blue and white” and ko‘akae, “old colored,” was made in the famed city of Jingdezhen located near the Yangzi River in southeastern China and known for centuries as the ceramics capital of the world.

Organized by China Institute Gallery, the exhibition includes objects from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and three private collections, including the Butler Family Collection in the United Kingdom. The China Institute is publishing a full-color catalogue to accompany the exhibition.

Pointe-à-Callière has the immense privilege of presenting a new exhibition, Japan, from May 16 to October 15, 2006. This exceptional exhibition invites visitors to discover an unknown Japan, much older than the land of samurai and geisha: a prehistoric land, but one that already had rich cultures that produced unique, refined objects.

For the first time ever outside of Japan we will be able to see collections from the Tokyo National Museum covering all the periods in Japanese prehistory. Visitors will be invited to embark on a fascinating journey, guided by 150 of the most splendid artifacts from the collections of the Tokyo National Museum and ten other Japanese institutions. The voyage begins over 30,000 years ago and ends in the 7th century AD, with the birth of the first unified state and the gradual spread of writing.

Along the way, there will be artifacts offering a glimpse of people’s lives and rituals, from figurines with strange, enormous eyes, to grinning figures, dancers, animals, spectacular pottery, bronze mirrors and more. These are only a few examples of the splendours awaiting visitors at Pointe-à-Callière. They’re sure to be both amazed and intrigued!
